The Band
Y&T is an American hard rock band formed in 1974. They released two albums with their previous name (Yesterday & Today) in the 70s. They began as a cover band and chose their name from a Beatles’ studio album.
Band members
- Dave Meniketti – lead guitar, vocals
- John Nymann – rhythm guitar
- Aaron Leigh – bass
- Mike Vanderhule – drums
Meniketti is the last surviving member of the band’s original, classic lineup.
The Show
I have known the band for many years, since I love 80s music, especially glam and heavy metal. So once I saw their Contagious video, I became an instant fan and started listening to more of their songs.
I went on a trip to Barcelona, and since the band was playing there, of course, I went to see them.
I arrived at the venue and got in line around 19.10. The tickets were sold out. The show took place in Razzmatazz 2, the place looked on the outside like an abandoned factory, plus it was on the second floor, but inside it was ok.
There were no opening bands. The show started at 20.30 with Open Fire, then Lipstick and Leather, and Don’t Stop Runnin’. Next: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Mean Streak, and Don’t Wanna Lose.
Then came the highly emotional Winds of Change, with Dave singing without playing his guitar, dedicating all his intensity to his voice. Yet for the first solo, he returned to his instrument. The people sang from the moment the show started, and in this song, they sang louder.
In Rock & Roll’s Gonna Save the World, John, the rhythm guitarist, did an amazing solo.
After they played Eyes of a Stranger, came the popular Midnight in Tokyo, when the audience sang, jumped, and went crazy. Hang ’em High has a sick guitar solo played by Dave and then a big Y&T hit, Summertime Girls.
It was the turn of my favorite song Contagious, followed by I Believe in You, which was presented by John, who dedicated the song to a friend. It’s a power ballad with a beautiful, bluesy, heartfelt solo played by Dave. At the end, he also does another more rocker solo. Dave is an incredible guitar player, totally underrated.
They continued with Black Tiger, Dirty Girl with another great bluesy solo, and I’m Coming Home.
Rescue Me set the bar high with everyone singing the catchy chorus.
At 22.20, they went out for a couple of minutes and returned to play a song that they hadn’t played in a long time, Hell or High Water. They finished the whole set with Forever, in which everyone sang the loudest of the night.
The concert ended at 22.30. Two hours of pure soulful rock with heavy moments.
