My Thoughts On

Kittie – One of the Most Successful Female Metal Bands of all time

Kittie is a female Canadian metal band, formed in 1996.  From their first album Spit (1999) they have transitioned from nu-metal and groove to a heavier aggressive, death sound.

Band Members

  • Morgan Lander – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano
  • Mercedes Lander – drums, backing vocals
  • Tara McLeod – lead guitar
  • Ivana “Ivy” Jenkins – bass

The band has had many changes in the lineup, the Lander sisters (Morgan and Mercedes) are the only original members.

They were a pioneer band when they appeared in the metal world. And they have had a lot of influence on female bands and singers that came after them.

Kittie started as a nu-metal band, with heavily distorted music and Morgan’s combination of melodic chorus and harsh vocals. Then, they transitioned more to thrash, death-growling vocals.

In 2000, they won popularity when they played in the Ozzfest (a festival organized by Ozzy Osbourne), where some of the most famous bands at that time played, like Korn, Coal Chamber, Soulfly, and Slipknot.

A long hiatus, a documentary recording, and the death of one of their bassists, Trish Doan in 2017, left the rest of the members of the band in a very bad state. They were having conversations with Trish about her returning to Kittie. So, they didn’t want to continue after that sad event.

However, they started receiving offers to play live and to record a new album, and the result was their new work, Fire. A consistent album, with powerful songs, angry lyrics, as always, and that “go f*** yourself” attitude. Fire came 13 years after their last album (I’ve Failed You), it was released on June 21st, 2024, and I would recommend it to any metal fan, great work.
