From Gothic to Industrial: Lord of the Lost -“Blood & Glitter” – Album Review

The Band

Lord of the Lost is an industrial-gothic band from Hamburg, Germany. More than 15 years ago, Chris Harms, the singer, formed the band. After some changes in their line-up, their actual formation is:

  • Chris “The Lord” Harms – singer, guitar
  • Class Grenayde – bass
  • Gared Dirge – keyboards & percussion
  • Pi Stoffers – guitar
  • Niklas Kahl – drums

They recently have been and will still be the supporting act for Iron Maiden in their Legacy of the Beast World Tour, European leg.

The Album

In December 2022, the band released their new album “Blood & Glitter” which was well received by the fans and even hit the N°1 on the Official German Music Charts. And now they are representing Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with their song Blood & Glitter.

On the album, they mix different musical genres like industrial, metal, gothic, electronic, and a pinch of dark wave and 70′-80’s glam.

The music in general is positive, with keyboards, synth, etc., but the lyrics are dark and hopeless. Related to the times we live in. Social criticism and the need to keep fighting even if we are alone because the final times are near.

The Songs

Blood & Glitter, it’s the first single of the album. Super catchy song (perfect for participating in Eurovision), with 80s effects and sounds. The video is super colorful, with 70s glam red, and gold fabulous costumes, that in the case of Chris Harms, his style and deep voice remind me a lot of David Bowie, like a 2023 Ziggy Stardust. Sick Keytar solo at the end, as an outro.

Leave Your Hate In The Comments heavier song, is funny and controversial at the same time. The band receives its share of hate on YouTube video comments. Most of them were very raw and hateful, and others mild and lame. But instead of getting upset by them, the band did this song making fun of their haters, their solitude, and their need for attention in the lyrics. In the video, each musician took the role of a typical hater. Also on the screen, above and below, the comments are screened throughout the video. What better way to respond to your haters than to expose them like this? I hope they’ll appreciate the band’s effort in recognizing them and be proud that they helped to inspire a kick-ass song.

Absolute Attitude, is a song about staying on your path, even if you got the whole world against you. The funny video kinda gives the impression that they were goofing around before the recording of the Blood and Glitter video and recorded. It also has the appearance of Gas Lipstick (ex-drummer of HIM).

The Future Of A Past Life (feat. Marcus Bischoff). Marcus Bischoff is the singer of Heaven Shall Burn, a metalcore German band that deals with political and environmental issues, and of course, this song is not an exception, singing about how we have mistreated our planet. One of my favorite songs on the album, musically and lyrically.

No Respect For Disrespect is a protest song against the elite and all the people that think they’re superior because they have the power or the money.

Reset The Preset (feat. Andy LaPlegua) We live in a world so chaotic, with so much technology, nobody has time to be happy, to enjoy themselves. We must not depend so much on smartphones, computers, etc. It calls us to change our minds about this, to become humans again instead of robots. It features Andy LaPlegua, Norwegian singer of the futurepop – EBM band, Icon of Coil.

Destruction Manual the chorus “Let it burn MF”, reminds me of the beginning of “Sway” by Coal Chamber. The song talks about “destroy to create”.

In the video, Chris Harms is putting on his makeup, and all of a sudden he and the entire band are girls playing music, like a hallucination.

Dead End is a song about desperation, a sense of not belonging anywhere, and that “all hope is gone”.

Leaving the Planet Earth is another one of my favorite songs from this album. The 80s beat, with a feel of nostalgia. Love the keys here. It is about someone running away from this planet because he has had enough of people and bad situations. Most of us can relate to this feeling. Of course, we’re not leaving the planet Earth any time soon, but sometimes we need to escape to our safe place, to have a time-out and recharge.

Forever Lost apocalyptic vibes. Like, when all falls down, we’ll stay together. The video shows news footage of disasters and recent political events.

Save Our Souls, feat. Ally Storch. Ally is a German violinist that has played with multiple bands like Subway to Sally and Haggard. Save our souls is like a desperate cry to a Higher Entity or God to save our souls from darkness and from silence when everything falls down.

One Last Song is a hypothetical case. If there was time for a last song, to whom would it be, with whom, and what would be the message?

The Look, feat. Blümchen is a German pop singer. The song is a cover of the famous late 80s Swedish rock-pop duo, Roxette.

For me, the album is a great work, both musically and lyrics. And this tour brought them to for the first time to South America (previously they had played in Mexico), but this time they added more countries, including Chile. I went to their show in Santiago, it was a blast, and we got the chance to meet the guys and take pictures with them. They were super nice.
