The Songs
1. Have You Had Enough? I like it. Electronic. The chorus gets more metal. The breakdown brings some of Poppy’s growls. Catchy.
2. The Cost of Giving Up. Melodic and sweet, almost like a power ballad. Breakup song. Pop, except for the breakdown that brings a heavy moment, as well as at the end.
3. They’re All Around Us. I didn’t like this too much. Too screamo for me. About traitors. The chorus has some melodic clean parts, but most of the song is screamo.
Good parts: it has a blegh in the breakdown and the double bass drums.
4. Yesterday. The first of the interludes. Less than a minute, a shorter track that serves almost as a palate cleanser. She is softly singing or talking a little speech reaffirming her decision of not going back to someone’s negative space.
5. Crystallized. I loved this song, so 80s pop, dance beat. One of my favorite tracks on this album.
6. Vital. This song is too pop mainstream sound for me, so I didn’t care about it that much.
7. Push Go. Dance. Electronic with some industrial elements in the back.
8. Nothing. This I liked it more. Heavier, metalcore at moments, screams, distortions, and some poppier voices in the clean parts. A blegh and a breakdown, growls.
9. The Center’s Falling Out. Heavy, only screams.
10. Hey There. Another interlude. It serves as an intro to the next song.
11. Negative Spaces. The title track. For me, it has a grunge tone and vibe. Nice.
12. Surviving on Defiance. Ethereal track, calm.
13. New Way Out. Bad Omens’s type of sound. Electronic vibes. Another hit for me.
14. Tomorrow. The last one of the interludes. Less than 1 minute. Spoken word by Poppy with some sounds in the back.
15. Halo. The last song of the album. A soft, calmer track, it is a nice song to end this work.
Final Thoughts
In general, it’s a good album, and I’m glad that Poppy is becoming more and more mainstream (because I think that she as an artist is very interesting). I also like that she is leaning more toward the metal side.
However, my favorite tracks from the album are the electronic ones. Poppy has a nostalgic sensibility that is expressed specially on those kinds of songs.
