The Band
The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in California in 1961. The band was mostly composed of the Wilson brothers (Brian, Dennis, and Carl) and their cousin Mike Love.
They started as a garage band in which Brian Wilson wrote the lyrics, which were focused on the teenage audience that depicted the American popular culture. Musically, they are known for their vocal harmonies and pop vibe.
Their first hit was Surfin’ U.S.A. in 1963, and they became the soundtrack of California’s youth with songs about cars, romance, and the surfing lifestyle. They were commercially successful until the mid-1960s when the British Invasion, bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, started to resonate and gained major popularity in the United States, taking over the music world.

The Album
Pet Sounds is the eleventh album by The Beach Boys, released on May 16, 1966.
The band had already abandoned their beach style before recording this album, and they took a more orchestral path with introspective and personal lyrics. Brian was inspired by his work with the musical producer Phil Spector, of using many instruments to create a wall of sound.
Brian felt a great admiration for The Beatles, and he wanted Pet Sounds to be their answer to the Rubber Soul album. He wanted to surpass the British band, but also felt very motivated by them.
The Songs
1. Wouldn’t It Be Nice. The opener track, happy, upbeat, choral harmonies. About picturing a beautiful love story with someone.
2. You Still Believe In Me. Ballad, organ, softer, percussion, keyboards, vocal harmonies.
3. That’s Not Me. This song has a darker feeling, musically speaking, with organ and tambourine.
4. Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder). Also, kind of dark.
5. I’m Waiting For The Day. It starts with a piano. Flute and a lot of percussion, and choirs. About a guy who’s in love, who is trying to comfort his love interest, who sadly is with someone else who treats her badly.
6. Let’s Go Away For A While. Sweet instrumental. Features a variety of instruments like ukulele, sleigh bells, accordion, horns, and piano.
7. Sloop John B. Choral harmonies, tambourine. Reminiscing about old times with a grandfather. It’s a traditional folk song.
8. God Only Knows. Beautiful love song, super romantic, about loving someone and the fear of losing their love.
I’ve always been familiar with this song because my father loves David Bowie’s cover of it. Both versions are pretty, but Bowie’s is darker and heartbreaking.
Bowie’s version:
9. I Know There’s An Answer. Tambourine, piano, organ, drums, sax solo. Psychedelic outro.
10. Here Today. Choirs in the background, piano, tambourine, trumpet. Nice song; he sings from the point of view of advising a new suitor about his ex.
11. I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times. Choral harmonies in the back, flute—sad undertone. About someone who feels that they don’t fit within these times.
12. Pet Sounds. Title track. Instrumental.
13. Caroline, No. Nice ballad. He meets by chance with an old love, yet she’s not the same girl he remembered. A sad song about the passing of time and the changes it provokes. Gloomy ending to a charming album.
Final Thoughts
Sadly, on June 11, 2025, Brian Wilson passed away at 82 years old, and my homage to him is to review Pet Sounds, which, even though I knew some of its songs, I wanted to listen to the full album.
Brian was a musical genius, songwriter, singer, and played multiple instruments, and was also the producer who co-founded the band. He added big productions, complex harmonies, orchestrations, and vocal layering along with his distinctive falsetto. He had black R&B as one of his influences.
Pet Sounds included experimental sounds that weren’t well-received at that time by their audience. Yet with time, it became recognized as one of the most influential rock albums of all time and has been recognized by many musicians since then.
I love their surfer songs, even though I’m not a “beach” kind of girl, but those songs are classics; however, I cannot disregard this album, especially with the perspective of time. And I can honestly say that Brian Wilson won his well-deserved place in the pinnacles of Rock and Roll Heaven.
